Ellul's views on technology (or technique) are somewhat refreshing after McLuhan and Heidegger. I agree with his views that we are becoming slaves to technology in many aspects. What was once thought to be able to give us more freedom, in essence ties us down more. I don't necessarily think that this makes Ellul a technophobe (or myself one either) but rather our use and reliance on technique should be questioned on a regular basis to ensure that we do not become too consumed.
Self augmentation as a characteristic of modern technique is another of Ellul's views that I agree with. We see this evident in the speed at which technology advances occur now. It seems like a new product is released, and then 3-6 months later a new version is released making the original obsolete. I find that very frustrating and it makes me very leary about buying the "newest, latest thing" because I know if will not be so for very long.
